The President’s Pride Cup is one of the top honors a Clemson University team can receive. Through a series of calculations, teams are ranked based upon their achievements in athletics, academics, leadership and community service. Clemson Athletics prides itself on the dedication of each student-athlete to strive to achieve on and off the athletic field.
Last year, Clemson Athletics had many things to celebrate, from ACC Championships to having three student-athletes receive the ACC postgraduate scholarships. It also proved to be another record-breaking year for President’s Pride Cup. This year’s recipient of the President’s Pride Cup is the women’s track and field and cross country team with 122 points. This is the third consecutive year the team has earned this honor, winning each year with more points than the previous year.
The team captured its third consecutive ACC Championship this spring in both indoor and outdoor track and field. At the ACC championship meet, the team won 16 individual and relay championships. The Tigers had three ACC Meet MVP winners: Dezerea Bryant, April Sinkler and Marlena Wesh. The team also had 22 First- and Second-Team All-Americans and 15 selections for the All-ACC Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Team. Not only were they busy on the track, but team members also averaged 20.38 hours of community service per student-athlete this year. In the leadership category they, ranked second with 49 points. Academically, the Tigers continue to impress having numerous members named to the ACC Honor Roll and maintaining a team GPA average exceeding 3.10. Kim Ruck and Alyssa Kulik also earned two of the three ACC postgraduate scholarships awarded to Clemson student-athletes.
The second place team for 2011-12 was rowing, with 87 points, and the third place team was women’s swimming and diving with 67 points. The President’s Pride Cup is on display in Vickery Hall for viewing. The women’s track and field/cross country team was recognized and presented with the trophy by President Barker at the Solid Orange Family Reunion on August 26. Each member received a commemorative cup at the ceremony. Read more about this award here.
