Clemson Women’s Track And Field Team Sets Season Bests In Final Meet Before ACC Championships

CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson women’s track and field team set several season-best marks at the Tiger Invitational held Saturday at the Clemson Indoor Track and Field Facility. In their final meet before the ACC Championships, the Lady Tigers posted solid performances. The team will return to action next Friday and Saturday, Feb. 20-21, as Clemson hosts the 2004 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships.

In Saturday’s track action, Jessica Cousins was the Lady Tigers’ top finisher in the 60m dash, finishing fifth with a time of 7.66. Silja Ulfarsdottir won the 200m dash with a time of 24.26, and Patrice McMillan was Clemson’s top finisher in the 400m, clocking a 58.33. In the 800m run, Casey Phillips placed fourth with a season-best time of 2:19.78 and Jennifer Barton recorded a lifetime-best in the mile run, crossing the finish line in 5:16.80. Jelyn Quick posted a season-best time of 8.77 in the event to finish fourth, and Marquita Dortch placed seventh in 8.95.

Michelle Rogers posted another season-best in the triple jump, recording a leap of 39’3.75″ to place fourth. In the pole vault, Sara Young cleared a season-best 11’11.75″ to finish fourth. Della Clark and Allison Bradshaw were fifth and sixth in the shot put with season-best marks of 41’8″ and 40’8.75″, respectively. Clark was the top Lady Tiger in the weight throw with a third-place finish and throw of 54’2.75″, and Krystal Woods placed fourth with a mark of 52’9.5″.

60m Dash Sheri Ann Brooks of Florida International recorded a time of 7.55 to win the event, followed by Charlotte’s Tempess Stark who ran a 7.60. Oriana Carter from Alabama-Birmingham finished third with a time of 7.63. The Lady Tigers’ Jessica Cousins recorded a time of 7.66 to place fifth. 60m Hurdles Jelyn Quick of Clemson posted an 8.77 for a fourth-place finish and the Lady Tigers’ Marquita Dortch ran an 8.95 to finish seventh. Clemson’s Christina Moore also competed in the preliminaries, running a time of 10.88. 200m Clemson’s Silja Ulfarsdottir crossed the finish line in 24.26 to win the 200m dash, while Florida International’s Sheri-Ann Brooks was the runner-up with a time of 25.14. Jennifer Craig of Samford took third place, finishing in 25.17. Clemson’s Sybil “Ope” Sobanjo finished in 26.45. 400m Karoline Hagen from South Florida won the 400m dash with a time of 56.41, followed by Charlotte’s Carlitha Sturdivant who clocked a 57.18 to finish second. Western Carolina’s Leslie Martin rounded out the top three with a time of 57.28. Clemson’s Patrice McMillan finished eighth with a time of 58.33, and teammate Sudati Masasu crossed the finish line in 59.84. 800m North Florida’s Romy Krueger claimed the 800m with a time of 2:12.31, while South Florida’s Bente General and Claire Ragot took second and third. General crossed the line in 2:13.98 and Ragot clocked a 2:19.20. Clemson’s Casey Phillips ran a season-best time of 2:19.78 to finish fourth, and LaToya Woodberry finished 24th in 2:31.10. Mile Alabama-Birmingham’s Petra Ivanova clocked a 5:07.95 to win the event, while Amber Littleton of North Florida was the runner-up with her time of 5:09.39. Appalachian State’s Marivi Mercado took third place, crossing the finish line in 5:11.59. Clemson’s Jennifer Barton finished sixth overall with a lifetime-best of 5:16.80. 3000m Run South Florida’s Christa Benton won the 3000m run with a time of 9:59.86, easily outdistancing the field. Nigisti Negussie of Georgia State was the runner-up in 10:11.39 and South Florida’s Jesiica Hellender took third place with a time of 10:12.49. 4x400m Run The University of South Florida 4x400m relay team won the event with a time of 3:47.68, followed by Alabama-Birmingham’s team with a time of 3:51.16. Western Carolina clocked a 3:51.17 to finish third. Distance Medley Relay Western Carolina’s relay team of Tonya Edmonds, Andrea Floyd, Becky Signoretti and Melanie Cooper clocked a 12:15.93 to win the distance medley relay. Alabama-Birmingham’s team finished second in 12:24.47 and Samford placed third with a time of 12:40.52. High Jump Georgia State’s Kristen Pace cleared 5’8″ to win the high jump, while Charlotte’s Adrienne Barnett and Rebecca Edwards both cleared 5’6″ to finish second and third, respectively. Long Jump Chaunte Howard of Georgia Tech recorded a mark of 19’1.5″ to win the event, and Clemson’s Michelle Rogers recorded a leap of 16’5.25″, Christina Moore recorded a mark of 14’2.5″. Triple Jump Appalachian State’s Ronda White automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships with her winning mark of 44’2″. Sharonda Johnson of Charlotte was the runner-up with a leap of 41’5.25″ and Tondra White of Appalachian State finished third with a mark of 39’6″. Clemson’s Michelle Rogers claimed fourth place with a season-best mark of 39’3.75″ and Katrina Moultrie posted a mark of 37’4″ to finish ninth. Pole Vault Former Lady Tiger Sara Young finished fourth among collegiate competitors with a mark of 11’11.75″, and Beth Jordan took seventh with a mark of 10’11.75″. Shot Put South Florida took the top two spots in the shot put, as Chandra Brewer posted a provisional qualifying mark of 52’6.5″ to win the event and Dayana Octavien was second with a throw of 46’10.25″. Appalachian State’s Beverly Burnett took third place with her mark of 46’0.75″. Clemson’s Della Clark finished fifth overall with a mark of 41’8″, and Allison Bradshaw tied for sixth place (40’8.75″). Lady Tiger Krystal Woods threw 34’3″. Weight Throw Former Lady Tiger standout Della Clark was fourth overall and third among collegiate athletes with a mark of 54’2.75″.
