Morgantown, W.V. – The Clemson women’s track and field team opened its 2001-2002 indoor season at the University of West Virginia Holiday Classic held Saturday. Kyana Elder and Jamine Moton posted provisional qualifying marks in their first meet of the season. Elder provisionally qualified in the 55m high hurdles with a time of 7.85, while Moton provisionally qualified in the weight throw and shot put with marks of 19.42m (63’8 3/4″) and 15.36m (50’4 3/4″), respectively.
Sophomore Katrina Moultrie (Marietta, GA) finished ninth in the 500m with a time of 1:21.29, and posted a sixth-place finish in the 300m (42.40).
Junior Marcia Smith (Decatur, GA) claimed the 300m with a time of 40.05, and freshman Randi Hinton (Baton Rouge, LA) finished second in 41.09. Senior Sheri Smith (Bronx, NY) finished 24th in the 200m with a time of 28.17.
In the 55m dash, Marcia Smith posted a time of 7.09 in the preliminaries before finishing second in the finals with a time of 7.11. Randi Hinton finished seventh overall in the 55m with a time of 7.29 after recording a time of 7.34 in the preliminaries of the event.
Senior Kyana Elder (Atlanta, GA) won the 55m high hurdles with a provisional qualifying time of 7.85 in the finals after recording a time of 7.88 in the preliminaries. Freshman Marquita Dortch (Powder Springs, GA) also competed in the 55m high hurdles, posting a time of 8.65 in the preliminaries.
Senior Jamine Moton (Glassboro, NJ) won the weight throw with a provisional qualifying mark of 19.42m (63’8 3/4″), while sophomore Mary Gosselin (Woodbridge, CT) took fifth with a mark of 14.14m (46’4 3/4″). Freshman Jackie Hudgins (Heightstown, NJ) placed fifth with a mark of 13.58m (44’6 3/4″), and freshman Kenya Reed (Columbia, SC) was seventh with a mark of 13.22m (43’4 1/2″).
Moton also won the shot put with a provisional qualifying mark of 15.36m (50’4 3/4″). Jackie Hudgins recorded a mark of 13.19m (43’3 1/4″) to place fifth, and Kenya Reed finished 13th with a mark of 10.85m (35’7 1/4″).
In the triple jump, freshman Gisele de Oliveira (Porto Alegre, Brazil) won the event with a mark of 12.30m (40’4 1/4″) while Sheri Smith finished second with a mark of 12.27m (40’3 1/4″).
Sophomore Katie Pickett (Maryville, TN) placed third in the high jump, clearing 1.59m (5’2 1/2″).
Clemson’s 4x400m relay team finished fourth with a time of 3:57.93.
In the pentathlon, Clemson took third and fourth. Junior Joana Costa (Sao Paolo, Brazil) tallied 3,193 points to place third, while junior Keshia Haughton (New Haven, CT) finished fourth with 3,011 points. Costa recorded a time of 8.7 in the high hurdles, while Haughton finished the race in 8.1. Costa cleared 1.50m (4’11”) in the high jump, and Haughton cleared 1.44m (4’8 3/4″). In the shot put, Haughton recorded a mark of 10.80m (35’5 1/4″) and Costa posted a mark of 8.49m (27’10 1/4″). Costa recorded a mark of 5.59m (18’4″) in the long jump, while Haughton posted a mark of 5.26m (17’3″) in the long jump. In the 800m, Costa recorded a time of 2:37.10, and Haughton finished the race in 3:05.90.
Clemson women’s track and field will return to the track on Saturday, January 5, as the Lady Tigers travel to compete in the Maryland Invitational.
