Clemson Women’s Track And Field Opens Competition At Penn Relays

PHILADELPHIA, PA – The Clemson women’s track and field team opened competition at the 2003 Penn Relays at Franklin Field Thursday. The Lady Tigers’ Joana Costa cleared a lifetime-best of 12’10” in the pole vault to win the collegiate event. The senior from Sao Paolo, Brazil, qualified for the East Region Championships with the mark, and ranks second on Clemson’s all-time list. The Lady Tigers’ all-time record in the event is 12’10.75″ set by Mandy McLane in 2001.

Also in Thursday’s action, Shakirah Rutherford and Silja Ulfarsdottir qualified for the East Region Championships in the 400m hurdles. Rutherford placed 10th with a time of 59.89, a season-best, while Ulfarsdottir posted a time of 1:00.16 to finish 16th. The Lady Tigers’ 4x100m relay team of Danielle Whaley competed in the preliminaries of the event. Clemson will compete in the college women’s finals on Friday after qualifying with a time of 47.01.

The Lady Tigers’ 4x200m relay team will take to the track on Friday, along with the shuttle hurdle relay team. Gisele Oliveira will also compete in the triple jump on Friday.
