Clemson Women,s Tennis Team To Compete In NCAA Final Four

ATHENS, GA – The Clemson women,s tennis team advanced to the semi-finals of the NCAA Women,s Tennis Team Championships with its 4-1 win over the University of North Carolina played on Friday. This season marks the second time in school history that the Tigers will compete in the Final Four, and the second time in as many years. Friday,s victory over the Tar Heels is also the first time that Clemson has defeated a conference rival in any round of the NCAA Championships.

The Tigers will face the Stanford Cardinal in the first of the two semi-final matches at 11:00 AM on Saturday at the Henry Field Courts at the Dan Magill Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Georgia. It will be the first time the two teams have met since 1996, when the Cardinal ended the Tigers, season with a 5-1 win in the round of 16 played in Tallahassee, FL. Clemson and Stanford also met in the NCAA Tournament in 1984, with Stanford claiming a 9-0 victory in the Sweet Sixteen match played in Los Angeles, CA.

The Tigers took a 1-0 lead into singles competition after capturing the doubles point with wins at flights one and three. On court three, Romy Farah and Carol Salge defeated North Carolina,s Caitlin Collins and Tanja Markovic by a score of 8-3. Clemson,s top-seeded duo of Julie Coin and Alix Lacelarie scored another upset victory over fifth-ranked Aniela Mojzis and Kendall Cline of North Carolina, as the Tigers won by an 8-3 tally. The Tar Heels, Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long captured the flight two doubles match over Clemson,s Daniela Alvarez and Maria Brito by a score of 8-0.

For the second time in as many days, Julie Coin clinched the match for the Tigers with her win at flight one singles. The #2-ranked senior from Amiens, France, won her first set over #41 Aniela Mojzis by a score of 6-3 before narrowly dropping the second set, 7-5. In the third set, Coin defeated Mojzis by a score of 6-2.

Clemson built their lead to 2-0 as Romy Farah gave Clemson its, third point with her three-set come-from-behind win. The 59th-ranked Farah dropped the first set to 24th-ranked Kendall Cline by a score of 6-2 before tying the match with her 6-2 second set win. In the third set, Farah dominated, defeating Cline by a score of 6-0.
