CULLOWHEE, NC – The Clemson women’s cross country team opened its 2002 campaign with a third-place finish at the Western Carolina Invitational held Saturday morning. UNC Asheville won the invitational meet with 31 points, while Western Carolina finished second (48 pts.). Clemson placed third with 97 points, and Mars Hill finished fourth with 127 points. Catawba was fifth (192 pts.), Wofford finished sixth (204 pts.) and Truett McConnell rounded out the field with 278 points.
Freshman Casey Phillips led the Lady Tigers with a 10th-place finish in 19:34.61, while sophomore Laura Ann Rukat covered the course in 20:13.30 to finish 16th. Sophomore Rebecca White and freshman Jenny Barton placed 20th and 21st with times of 20:49.33 and 20:50.31, respectively. Freshman Jennifer Hooten recorded a time of 22:00.37 to finish 30th, and junior Evan Ross was 38th in 23:03.08. Sophomore Christina Reinhard finished 40th in 23:19.30, Shannon Day was 43rd in 23:33.41 and junior Tiffany Charles finished 44th (23:34.92). Sophomore Erica Jaros covered the course in 25:21.16 to finish 54th, and senior Kim McGill was 58th with a time of 29:17.07.
The Lady Tigers will next compete at the Catamount Classic in Cullowhee, NC, on Sept. 7.
