Clemson Women Capture Division I Team Titles at 2001 Daniel Chapter One Relays

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Clemson’s women’s cross country team placed two teams in the top four in the women’s competition, as the Tigers captured the Division I team title at the 2001 Daniel Chapter One Cross Country Relays at Gardner-Webb.

In an alternative format to traditional cross country meets, squads were divided into two-person teams and were required to pass the baton midway through each race. The women’s race distance was 6,000 meters and the men’s race was 10,000 meters.

In the women’s race, Clemson’s tandem of Ann Cade and Kristi Toothman ran a time of 23:49.50 to edge Savannah College of Art & Design’s Melanie Clark and Beth O’Brien (24:04.00). Gardner-Webb’s Petrona McClymont and Kathryn Phillips (25:03.00) finished third, followed by teammates Melissa Houghton and Amanda Hofacker (25:10.00). Clemson’s Laura Ann Rukat and Evan Ross (25:25.00) rounded out the top five. Shannon Day and Jennifer Zawislak finished 12th overall with a time of 28:03.00.

Team points were scored head-to-head in a dual meet format. Clemson finished the women’s Divison I competition with a 2-0 overall mark, beating both Gardner-Webb and Wofford.
