Clemson, S.C.—Doc Redman won medalist honors with the lowest 54-hole score by a Clemson golfer in 13 years to lead Clemson to the team title at The Jackrabbit in Valentine, Nebraska on Tuesday afternoon. It was the 69th tournament victory of Larry Penley’s Clemson head coaching career.
Clemson finished first in the 12- team event with a 847 score, 17-under-par. The Tigers closed with a two-under-par 286 score in the final round to defeat the University of Missouri by two shots. Central Florida shot a final round 278 score to finish third in the team race at 854 and host school South Dakota State was fourth at 855.
Redman’s performance was record setting as he had scores of 63-70-70 to finish at 13 under par 203. His 63 in the first round tied a Clemson record for low 18-hole score. That round included six birdies and two eagles. His 203 score for the tournament was a record by four shots for a Clemson freshman and the lowest by any Clemson golfer since D.J. Trahan shot 15-under-par at the Augusta State Invitational in 2003.
Redman won the tournament by six shots over Euan Walker of Missouri. Redman’s six-shot win was the largest victory margin in school history. The previous best was a five-shot victory by Kyle Stanley in winning the Carpet Classic in 2008, and by Brad Clark in winning the South Carolina Intercollegiate in 1986.
The freshman from Raleigh also established a Clemson mark earliest victory in a career. This was just his second tournament. The previous mark was five tournaments to gain victory by Jonathan Byrd, Kyle Stanley and Austin Langdale.
This marked the first time since 2014 Cleveland Classic that Clemson had the individual champion and the team champion at the same event.
Sophomore Bryson Nimmer also had a top 10 finish with a 215 score, one-under-par. It was quite a comeback for Nimmer who shot an opening round 78 and was Clemson’s non-counter, then had a second round 66 that was his career best score. Freshman William Nottingham finished 14th, including a two under par 70 that was a key to Clemson winning the team title.
Senior Carson Young gave Clemson four top 25 finishers. His 218 score for 54 holes was 22nd in the field of 64 golfers. Josh Fickes finished with a 223 score and was tied for 41st.
Clemson will be back in action this Sunday through Tuesday, October 2-4 at the Nike Elite Invitational at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.
