Clemson, SC-Julie Talley scored 14 points and Lakeia Stokes recorded her second straight double-double, leading Clemson to a 62-56 women’s college basketball victory over Brigham Young Monday night. The game was played at the Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout in Anchorage, Alaska.
Talley had her second consecutive outstanding game with her 14 points as the native of Seneca made 5-7 shots from the field, including 2-4 three-point shots. She scored 15 points in the season opening win over South Carolina. Stokes had 12 points and a game high 13 rebounds. It was her second straight double-double with rebounds from the guard position.
Jim Davis had a pair of double figure scorers off the bench in Queen and Khaili Sanders, who had 10 points. Maggie Slosser added eight points and six rebounds for Clemson, who is now 2-0. BYU fell to 1-1. BYU was led by Ambrosia Anderson, who had 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Clemson shot 39.3 percent from the field for the game and held BYU to 35 percent shooting.
“We defeated a very good Brigham Young team tonight,” said head coach Jim Davis. “We jumped out by 10 points early and held the lead most of the game. Brigham Young made many runs at us, but we made some clutch shots.
“Julie Talley led us in scoring and played very well at the point. But, for the second straight game, Kanetra Queen really gave us some outstanding minutes off the bench. She had 11 points and four assists and did not have a turnover in 21 minutes while running the offense.
“Overall I was pleased with the way we handled the basketball, we had just 14 turnovers. And, our defense was solid, we held BYU to 35 percent field goal shooting. We contested their shots. We were out-rebounded by one, but BYU is a very good rebounding team. I was very pleased with the win.”
