Clemson Volleyball Outlasts Georgia, 3-1

ATHENS, Ga. – Senior Cindy Stern’s 24 kills and 15 digs led the 13th-ranked Clemson volleyball team to a 3-1(15-8, 15-4, 12-15, 15-6) win over Georgia Tuesday night in Athens, GA. Stern hit .340 for the evening, with seven errors and 50 attempts and led the team with three block solos.

Clemson jumped out to an early lead in game one, taking an 11-3 advantage before the Bulldogs went on a 5-2 run, cutting the deficit to 13-8. The Tigers scored the final two points for the win, then won game two handily, 15-4.

Game three was close in the beginning, with the two teams battling back and forth until Georgia took a 5-4 lead, then won four-straight points. The Bulldogs eventually took a 12-5 lead before the Tigers scored four-straight points to cut the lead to 12-9. Georgia had game-point at 14-10, but the Tigers held off the Bulldogs to cut the lead to 14-12. The Tigers held off another game-point attempt, but the Bulldogs took the 15-12 win.

Clemson took an easy 10-1 lead in game four, before Georgia went on a 4-1 scoring run. The Tigers regrouped to win the final game 15-6.

Senior Alison Coday hit .256, with 15 kills four errors and 43 attempts. Freshman Jessi Betcher led the team with 57 assists, and senior Emily Gorla paced the team with 18 digs. Four other Tigers were in double-figures for digs: Sophomore Jodi Steffes and Stern each had 15, Betcher had 12 and senior Heidi Cooper recorded 10 digs.

The Tigers recorded 15 team blocks, led by freshman Mallory Benson, who tallied seven block assists and one block solo. Steffes had four block assists, while Coday had two block solos and three block assists.

Clemson (27-1, 13-1 ACC) will play host to Wake Forest Friday at 7 p.m. Georgia drops to 9-14, 4-8 SEC with the loss.
