Clemson Volleyball Defeats Wake Forest, 3-0

CLEMSON, S.C. -The Clemson volleyball team, ranked 13th nationally, defeated Wake Forest 3-0 (15-7, 15-12, 15-13) Friday night at Jervey Gym. The Tigers had a balanced attack, with four players hitting over .300 in the win. With the victory, Clemson maintains the lead in the ACC standings.

After a close beginning to game one, the Tigers broke open the scoring to win 15-7. Wake Forest took a 6-1 lead in game two, before Clemson rallied to tie the score at seven apiece. The Demon Deacons went on a 5-1 scoring run, but the Tigers again rallied to tie the score at 12 points apiece. Clemson took the next three points for the win.

Clemson jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game three, but Wake Forest came back to lead the game 7-6. The Tigers tied the score at nine points apiece, but Wake won the next two points for an 11-9 lead. Clemson scored three unanswered points to lead 12-11, then Wake scored two points for a 13-12 lead. The Tigers then won the next three points to win the match.

Senior Alison Coday hit .324 with 14 kills, three errors and 34 attempts. Freshman Mallory Benson hit .455, with six kills, one error and 11 attempts. Sophomore Jodi Steffes had nine kills, two errors and 21 attempts for a .333 attack percentage and led the team with 15 digs. She also recorded three service aces in the match.

Freshman setter Jessi Betcher hit .400, with three kills, one error and five attempts, plus she paced the team with 38 assists. Senior Cindy Stern had nine kills and four blocks in the match.

Clemson (28-1, 14-1 ACC) will play host to Duke Saturday at 6 p.m. The team will honor its five seniors in their last regular season match. Wake Forest drops to 23-8, 9-6 ACC with the loss.
