Clemson Upsets No. 21 Miami, 4-3

May 13, 2000

Baton Rouge, LA – For the second straight year, the Clemson men’s tennis team advances to the second round of the NCAA tournament with a 4-3 win over the 21st-ranked Miami Hurricanes on Saturday afternoon. In the second round, to be played on Sunday afternoon, the Tigers will face 10th-ranked LSU.

The win marks the second time this season that Clemson has defeated Miami. The first match between the two teams was played on April 14 and was also decided by a score of 4-3. In Saturday’s match, Clemson won two out of three doubles matches and split the six singles matches with the Hurricanes. Josh Goffi, Tomasz Boniecki, and Marko Gojanovic each picked up singles wins for the Tigers. Gojanovic’s three set victory over Joel Berman was the clinching point.

Quotes from Clemson head coach Chuck Kriese:

“That was a four hour war from the first ball that was hit to the last ball that was hit. It was a great tennis match. Miami, every guy on their team battled as hard as they could and every guy on our team battled as hard as they could and we were lucky enough to pull it out. I think if there was a turning point, the doubles were huge. I have been in this business long

enough to know that you just try to put seven tough points out there and

hopefully it works out. Miami was just excellent, we were fortunate to beat them. “
