Clemson Travels to No. 10 Florida State & Pitt This Week

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson women’s soccer team is set to travel to Tallahassee, Fla. to face the No. 10 Florida State Seminoles on Thursday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. After Thursday’s match, the team will head to Pittsburgh, Pa. for a Sunday match against the Panthers that is set to kickoff at 1 p.m at Ambrose Urbanic Field.

Clemson Notes:

  • The Tigers are coming off a hard-fought battle against No. 11 Boston College on Sunday, Sept. 30 at home where they fell 2-1 in their annual “Pink Game.”
  • The lone goal for the Tigers against Boston College came off the foot of junior forward Mackenzie Smith, who netted her first goal of the season and only the third of her career as she was a defender during her first two seasons at Clemson.
  • Thursday’s match against No. 10 Florida State will mark the fifth ranked opponent this season that Clemson has faced and the fourth consecutive match against a ranked opponent inside the top 15.
  • Last week, sophomore forward Mariana Speckmaier earned ACC Co-Offensive Player of the Week for her efforts in helping Clemson upset the undefeated Virginia Cavaliers on Sept. 20 in double overtime.
  • The Miami, Fla. native leads the team with six goals on the season while also leading the team in scoring with 13 points, on six goals and one assist.
  • The Tiger defense has dominated this season against ranked opponents, as they kept Virginia off the scoreboard for the first time during the 2018 campaign. Virginia was averaging 3.14 goals per game entering the Sept. 20 match. On Sunday, Sept. 23 the Clemson defense held the North Carolina Tar Heels to 11 shots and just three on goal, despite the Heels averaging 19.2 shots and 8.5 shots on goal per match in their first 10 contests.
  • Junior goalkeeper Sandy MacIver is 5-3-0 on the season with four shutouts. She has 19 saves in 739 minutes in net for Clemson, a goals against average of .730 and a save percentage of .760.
  • The Winsford, England native missed the first four matches of the season as she was in France, where she represented England’s women’s national team and earned a bronze medal at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup.
  • Starting defender Sam Staab was the only collegiate player called up to the U.S. U23 Women’s National Team for the 2018 Nordic Tournament that took place from Aug. 29-Sept. 3. The San Diego, Calif. native scored the team’s game-winning goal in the 1-0 win over Norway to secure the USA’s first-place finish.

Florida State Notes:

  • The No. 10 Seminoles enter the match at 9-2-1 as they defeated Notre Dame, 4-0, on Sept. 27.
  • Florida State is fifth in the country in shutout percentage (.750) with nine in its 12 matches this season. FSU gave up its first goal of the season in its 4-1 win over No. 2 UCLA on Sept. 2.
  • Leading the offense for the Noles are junior forward Deyna Castellanos and freshman midfielder Yujie Zhao. Both players have assisted on three goals with Castellanos netting five goals and Zhao netting four.
  • Redshirt freshman Brooke Bollinger is 9-2-1 with eight shutouts in her 12 starts in net for Florida State, allowing only four goal while picking up 23 saves in her 1,092 minutes. She is tied third in the nation in shutouts (8) while ranked seventh in goals against average (.330).

Series Notes:

  • Florida State has a 16-7-4 record all-time against Clemson, with the Noles being unbeaten in the last 14 games in the matchup, with an 11-0-3 record that dates back to 2004.
  • The last regular season meeting was at Historic Riggs Field and ended in a 2-2 draw on Oct. 26, 2017.
  • The last time the two teams met at the Seminole Soccer Complex, the match ended in a 3-1 Noles victory on Sept. 24, 2015.

Pitt Notes:

  • Pitt is set to square off with Miami on Thursday, Oct. 4 before playing host to the Tigers on Sunday, Oct. 7.
  • The Panthers enter Thursday’s match 0-4-0 in conference play as they return home after a tough road trip against No. 5 North Carolina on Sept. 20, No. 16 NC State on Sept. 23 and Virginia Tech on Sept. 27.
  • Freshman forward Anna Rico is leading Pitt offensively this season, tallying six points on three goals.
  • Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Amaia Pena is 4-3-1 in her 737 minutes in net for Pitt, allowing 14 goals for a goals against average of 1.71 and a save percentage of .750.
  • Freshman keeper Katherine Robinson has appeared in five matches for 287 minutes this season and is 0-3-0, with a 3.14 goals against average and a .655 save percentage.

Series Notes:

  • This will be the fourth all-time meeting between the two programs in a series dating back to the 2013 season. The Tigers own a 3-0-0 all-time advantage including a mark of 1-0-0 in Pittsburgh.
  • In the last meeting, Clemson shut out Pitt in a 2-0 victory at Historic Riggs Field on Oct. 16, 2015. The last regular season meeting between the two teams at Ambrose Urbanic Field was Oct. 26, 2014, where the No. 17 Tigers defeated Pitt 2-1.
