CLEMSON, SC – Clemson track & field, fresh off a pair of top-25 team finishes at last week’s NCAA Indoor Championships, will kick off its 2011 outdoor season this weekend in Miami, FL. The Hurricane Invitational will be held Friday and Saturday, March 18-19 at Cobb Stadium. The meet will serve as a return for three Clemson women’s track & field standouts – Michaylin Golladay, Patricia Mamona and Liane Weber. All three exhausted their indoor eligibility but will begin their senior outdoor seasons this weekend.
“I’m excited to get those kids back on the track and in our uniform,” said Lawrence Johnson, Clemson’s Director of Track & Field. “It hasn’t been the same without them. It’s good for the team and our morale. They’re excited about their first real competition with a Clemson jersey this year.”
Last season, Mamona won the NCAA outdoor championship in the triple jump. Weber was the ACC’s heptathlon champion, while Golladay’s season culminated with All-America honors in the 4x100m relay and a NACAC U23 silver medal in the 100m hurdles. All three will see action in various events at Miami.
The meet gets underway Friday with several field events, including the high jump, pole vault and javelin. On Saturday, Clemson’s first track action will be the men’s high hurdles at 1:45 PM. Several athletes from the men’s and women’s teams will compete across multiple events. On the men’s side, freshly crowned NCAA heptathlon champion La’Mont Jackson, Jordan Rispress.
The women’s team will compete primarily in the sprints and hurdles. NCAA indoor champion Janice Jackson, Briana Johnson, Mamona, Bridgette Owens and Weber are all entered in the 100m high hurdles. In the field events, Jasmine Brunson is entered in the triple jump and Mamona in the long jump. April Sinkler is entered in the high jump and long jump, while Christy Gasparino and Lauren Terstappen will compete in the pole vault.
