NCAA East Preliminary Round Notes

CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson track & field program will send 34 athletes – 20 members from the ACC championship women’s team and 14 from the men’s squad – to compete Thursday through Saturday at the NCAA East Preliminary Round in Bloomington, IN. The top 48 individuals and top 24 relays in the East and West (Eugene, OR) qualified for this weekend’s meets. From there, the top 12 individuals and relays move on to the NCAA outdoor nationals in Des Moines, IA from June 8-11.

The meet will be streamed live on Indiana University’s home page, IUhoosiers.com. Video coverage of track events will be available starting at 3:30 PM Thursday, 4:30 PM on Friday, and 6:00 PM on Saturday. Live results will be available on the IU track home page as well.

The meet will be held at Indiana’s Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex, the same facility that played host to the 1997 NCAA Outdoor Championships. That year, Clemson’s men tied for 17th place and were led by the 4×100 relay that scored a runner-up finish.

The Clemson women’s team enters the meet with a No. 4 national rating beside its name. The Tigers have been no lower than sixth all season and were rated as high as No. 3 nationally in the May 10 poll. Five female athletes qualified in multiple events, including April Sinkler and Jasmine Edgerson in three apiece. Jasmine Brunson, Stormy Kendrick and Brittney Waller all qualified in two events apiece.

Sinkler leads the entire East Prelim field in the long jump, boasting a mark of 21’9.5″ she set in a school record two weeks ago at home. She is also tied for second in the East in the high jump. Kim Ruck is the only other Tiger atop the performance list within the East Region, as she holds the top time (33:16.45) in the 10,000 meters.

The men’s team qualified sprinters Justin Murdock and Warren Fraser in two events apiece, the 100 and 200 dash. Josh Fowler qualified in both horizontal jumps, while Alex Padgett will compete in two different throwing events (shot put, hammer throw).

Spencer Adams is the highest-ranked member of the men’s team within the East. He is third in the preliminary field heading into the meet this weekend in the 110 hurdles. He ran a personal best 13.58 at Clemson’s Rock Norman Track a few weeks back. Murdock (10.13) is tied for sixth in the 100-meter performance list heading into the weekend.

All four relays qualified from Clemson – the men’s and women’s 4×1 and 4×4 groups. All four teams are currently ranked within the top 12 of the East.
