Clemson, SC–Seventh-seeded and 67th-ranked Clemson will begin play in the 2001 ACC Men’s Tennis Tournament on Thursday morning at 10:00 am in Orlando, FL against eighth-seeded NC State. The tournament is part of the 2001 ACC Springfest which will feature team championships in eight spring sports. All tennis matches will be played at the Lake Cane Marsha Park and Tennis Center.
The Tigers have won 23 straight matches against NC State and hold a 40-8 all-time advantage over the Wolfpack. Since the inception of the dual format tournament in 1986, the Tigers are 2-0 against NC State in ACC tournament play. This season, in a match played in Clemson on April 13, the Tigers defeated the Wolpack 6-1. In that match, Clemson swept doubles competition and won five out of six singles matches.
For Clemson, senior Josh Goffi is ranked 61st nationally and has played all of his dual matches in the number-one position. Junior Marko Gojanovic leads the Tigers in overall singles wins with 22 while posting a 4-2 mark in ACC play. Junior Darren Knight’s 20 overall doubles wins are also tops on the team and the pair of he and Brad Emendorfer are 4-2 in ACC number-one doubles competition.
The winner of the Clemson and NC State match will advance to meet second-seeded North Carolina on Friday at 12:00 noon. Semifinal matches are scheduled for 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM on Saturday, while the championship will be played on Sunday at 11:00 AM.
