Clemson Swimming & Diving Teams To Open 2003-04 Season Against LSU Friday

Oct. 1, 2003

CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will open their 2003-04 season on Friday against Louisiana State. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. in Clemson’s McHugh Natatorium. This will be the first meet held in McHugh since Nov. 9, 2001, as the natatorium was closed for renovations following that meet. Due to the 12:00 p.m. start time scheduled for the Clemson vs. Virginia football game on Oct. 11, the date and time for the Orange & White swimming and diving meet has been changed. The intrasquad meet will now be held on Friday, Oct. 10 at 5:00 p.m. in McHugh Natatorium.

Last season, the Clemson men’s team finished the year with a 7-4 overall record and a 3-2 mark in the ACC, while the women’s team was 7-6 overall and 2-3 in the conference. The teams placed sixth and fifth, respectively at the 2003 ACC Championships and each team sent two athletes to the NCAA Championships. Rob Kummer competed in the 100 fly and Eric Shulick in the one and three-meter diving competitions for the men’s team, while Mandy Commons swam the 100 breast and Kim Routh the 500 and 1650 free for the Clemson women’s team.

Louisiana State’s men’s program finished 18th at the 2003 NCAA Championships after posting a 4-7 overall record in dual meets and placing seventh at the Southeastern Conference Championships. The LSU women’s team placed 32nd overall at the NCAA Championships and finished the regular season with an 8-6 record and a seventh-place SEC meet finish.

This will be only the second meeting between Clemson and LSU. During the 1994-95 season, the LSU men defeated Clemson by a score of 122-115, while the Clemson women’s team lost a 138-105 decision to the LSU women’s team in a meet held at McHugh Natatorium.
