CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will travel to Chapel Hill, NC to compete in the Nike Cup on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The preliminary rounds will begin at 10:00 a.m. and the finals will be held at 6:00 p.m. each day, at the meet that will be held at Koury Natatorium on the campus of North Carolina.
The Nike Cup field consists of ten men’s teams and ten women’s teams. The men’s and women’s teams from East Carolina, Kentucky, Kenyon College, Louisiana State, North Carolina, N.C. State, Syracuse and Virginia Tech will join Clemson at the meet, as well as the Tennessee men’s team and the Michigan women’s team. Tennessee’s men are ranked 12th, while North Carolina and Kentucky’s men’s teams are tied for 21st in the College Swimming Coaches Association poll. On the women’s side, North Carolina is ranked 15th and Michigan is 16th according to the latest CSCAA poll.
The 25th-ranked Clemson men’s team is 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the Atlantic Coast Conference after upsetting then-#19 Florida State on Nov. 8. Mark Henly has won five individual events on the season, while Buddy Reed, Drew Scheerhorn and Eric Shulick have claimed first place in four individual events apiece. The Tigers’ 400 medley relay team has won the event all seven times that the race has been contested.
The Tiger women’s team is 4-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play, most recently falling to defending ACC Champion Virginia on Nov. 1. Kim Routh has led the Clemson women’s team, winning the 500 free three times and the 1000 free two times. Shelly Klaus has finished first in the 200 fly in two meets while Christine Anseeuw and Lindsey Kroeger have each won one individual event and been a member of two first-place relay teams so far this season.
