CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams fell to North Carolina on Saturday afternoon at the Spartanburg Middle Tyger YMCA in Spartanburg, SC. The Tiger women’s team fell to the 11th-ranked Tar Heels by a score of 214.5-85.5. With the loss, Clemson falls to 6-5 overall and 1-2 in the ACC. Clemson’s men’s team lost a 193-108 decision to #14 North Carolina, dropping to 6-3 (2-1 ACC) on the season.
Elise Thieler led the Tiger women, winning the 100 fly with a time of 56.99 and placing second in the 50 free with a time of 24.35. Thieler was also a member of the Tigers’ top 200 medley and 400 free relay teams.
In the 200 medley relay, Clemson’s team of Lindsey Kroeger, Mandy Commons, Thieler and Jenna Burtch placed second with a time of 1:45.83. The Tigers’ Burtch, Ashley Shafer, Christine Woodruff and Thieler posted a time of 3:34.02 for a second-place finish in the 400 free relay.
Kim Routh and Nichole Carlton placed second and third in the 500 free with times of 4:56.59 and 5:01.43, respectively for the Tigers. Routh took second place in the 1000 free (10:14.63) and Carlton finished third in the event (10:17.13). Shafer posted a time of 53.65 in the 200 free for a third-place finish.
Commons placed second for the Tigers in the 100 and 200 breast, posting times of 1:05.21 and 2:23.98, respectively. Kroeger took third place in the 100 back for Clemson with a time of 59.06, while Meaghan Murphy was third in the 200 fly (2:06.52).
In diving action, Jessica Watcke placed second for the Tigers in both the one and three-meter competitions.
Mark Henly won the 200 back (1:49.71) and placed second in the 100 back (50.84) to lead the Tiger men’s team. Buddy Reed finished second in the 200 back (1:51.43) and third in the 100 back (51.39) for Clemson. Reed took second place in the 200 IM for the Tigers (1:53.88), while Henly finished third (1:54.52) in the event.
Drew Scheerhorn took second place in the 50 and 100 free for Clemson, posting times of 21.51 and 46.58, respectively. Brent Hitchcock recorded a time of 47.15 for a third-place finish in the 100 free.
In the 100 breast, Ryan Cassella and Gregor Govse tied for second with a time of 57.68 in the event. Govse took second, and Cassella third in the 200 breast with times of 2:04.24 and 2:05.89, respectively. Rob Kummer placed second in the 200 fly (1:52.56) and third in the 100 fly (51.52) for Clemson, while Tommy Rappold was second in the 100 fly (51.43).
The Tigers’ team of Henly, Cassella, Kummer and Scheerhorn placed second in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:32.98. Clemson’s Hitchcock, Josh Williams, Charlie Dillon and Scheerhorn finished second in the 400 free relay (1:45.83).
Craig Thomas led the Tiger divers, winning the one-meter competition and placing second in the three-meter. Eric Shulick placed second in the one-meter for Clemson.
The Tiger swimming and diving teams will travel to Charlottesville, VA to take on Virginia on Sunday, Jan. 26. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
