CORAL GABLES, FL – The Clemson men’s and women’s swimming teams defeated the Miami Hurricanes and the women’s team dropped a 145-61 loss to Penn State last Friday. The men’s team defeated Miami 143-61 while the women’s team defeated the Hurricanes 164.5-56.5. The men’s team improved to 4-1 overall while the women dropped to 3-2.
The Tiger men’s team won seven of the 11 events contested to defeat the Hurricanes. Brent Hitchcock was a dual winner for Clemson, winning the 100 free (47.89) and 200 free (1:44.30). The 200 medley relay team of Drew Scheerhorn, Gregor Govse, Rob Kummer and Josh Williams won the event in 1:37.81 to open the meet. John Dean claimed the 100 fly in 51.88 while Mark Henly won the 100 back in a time of 53.29. Matt Norman won the 100 breast in 58.63 and the 200 free relay team of Hitchcock, Williams, Wilson and Kenny Roberts won that event in 1:29.52, almost three seconds faster than the second place team.
On the women’s side, Clemson’s Jenna Burtch was the only Tiger to win an event in Clemson’s loss to Penn State but the Tigers claimed nine of the eleven events against Miami. Burtch won the 100 free against the Nittany Lions in a time of 52.50. Jenna Burtch claimed the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:45.93 while Jenna Burtch won the 200 free in 1:53.79. Mandy Commons’ time of 1:04.57 in the 100 breast was four seconds better than any other competitor in that race. Thieler, Anderson, Peterson and Hider claimed the 200 free relay with a time of 1:38.32 to close out the meet for the Tigers.
Clemson hosts ACC rival North Carolina this Saturday at McHugh Natatorium. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
