CLEMSON, SC- The Tiger swimming and diving teams will open the regular season Saturday afternoon when they do battle with the Virginia Cavaliers and the Rice Owls at McHugh Natatorium. The first event is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
Saturday’s meet is the first of three consecutive home meets for the Tigers and is the ACC opener for both Clemson and Virginia. The Tigers are coming of a successful Orange and White intra-squad meet during which nine Tigers claimed dual championships.
Among the dual winners on the women’s side were junior All-American Mandy Commons and fellow junior Jenna Burtch. Commons claimed victories in both the 100 breast (1:04.50) and the 200 breast (2:22.47) events. Burtch won the three events on the day including the 50 free (24.04), the 200 free (1:53.18) and the 100 free (52:00).
Freshman Buddy Reed made an impressive debut for the Tigers by winning three events including the 100 back (53.38), the 200 IM (1:57.88), and the 200 back (1:54.80). Sophomore Rob Kummer is looking to pick up where he left off last year in the butterfly events, as he won both the 100 fly (55:41) and 200 fly (1:56.60) at the meet.
The Virginia men’s and women’s teams defeated West Virginia in a dual meet last Friday in Charlottesville. The Rice women will visit Clemson after a Friday night meet against Georgia Tech in Atlanta.
