Chapel Hill, NC- The Clemson Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving teams will travel to Chapel Hill to face North Carolina in a dual meet Friday at Koury Natatorium. The last time these two teams met was at the Nike Cup in November. The North Carolina women took first place with 883.5, while the Lady Tigers finished fourth with 717 points. The Tiger men came in first place with 1053 points, ahead of the second place Tar Heels who had 862.5 points.
The Lady Tigers enter the meet coming off of their first win of the season, a 120-113 victory over Davidson. This improved their record to 1-5 (0-3 ACC). Clemson will now look for their first ACC win of the year. Michelle Parkhurst garnered ACC Swimmer-of-the-Week honors for January 9 to lead Clemson. She recorded three individual event wins against Kentucky and Davidson. Nicole Kroeger (200 freestyle), Mary Paulsen (50 freestyle), Jill Allen (200 IM), Jen Grove (100 freestyle), Nichole Carlton (500 freestyle), and Jess Watcke (one-meter and three-meter board) also pitched in with individual event victories over Davidson.
Clemson men’s team will try to knock off their first ranked opponent of the year this week in Chapel Hill. The Tigers have suffered defeats against Florida State, Virginia, and Kentucky earlier in the year. Clemson can even their ACC record up with a win as they sit 3-3 (1-2 ACC). In the meet against Davidson, seven different Tigers touched the wall first for individual event wins.
All-time against North Carolina, Clemson is 5-22 on the women’s side and 5-40-1 on the men’s. The Lady Tigers last beat the Tar Heels during the 1998-99 campaign when they were 6-2 and finished fourth at the ACC Championships. For the men, they have not lost in the last two dual meets in Chapel Hill. They are 1-0-1, with a win in 2001-02, and a tie in 2003-04.
