Clemson Swimming and Diving in Fifth Place After Day Two of ACC Championships

The Clemson men’s swimming and diving team finished Day Two in fifth place with 146 points at the 2005 Atlantic Coast Conference Championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.

The Tigers opened the day with Jon Mengering earning a sixth-place finish in the 500 free with a time of 4:24.67. Mengering’s time provisionally qualifies him for the NCAA meet and moves him into second place on the Clemson all-time list in the 500 free style. Sean Geary recorded a time of 4:28.13 to earn a 14th-place finish in the event. Geary’s time was the sixth-fastest in Clemson history.

Senior Buddy Reed placed sixth in the 200 IM with a final time of 1:50.67. Jordan Raynovich earned an 11th-place finish with a time of 1:51.26 and six team points.

Mark Vahle finished the 50 free in fourth place with a time of 20.29. His preliminary time of 20.14 ranks Vahle in third place in the Clemson record books and provisionally qualifies him for the NCAA Championships.

Clemson’s 200 free relay team placed sixth with a season-best time of 1:21.09.

Virginia leads the overall meet with 250 team points. The 2005 ACC Championships continue on Friday with the 400-yard individual medley, 100-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, three-meter diving and the 400-yard medley relay. Preliminaries will begin at 11:00 a.m. with finals commencing at 7:00 p.m.
