CLEMSON, S.C. – The 34th-ranked Clemson men’s tennis team improved to 5-3 on the season with three wins over Gardner-Webb, Mercer and Wofford on Saturday at Hoke Sloan Tennis Center. All three were 4-0 sweeps.
In the first match of the day, Clemson swept Gardner-Webb after winning the doubles point, thanks to wins from 60th-ranked Hunter Harrington and Alejandro Augusto at No. 1 and Hampton Drake and Christian Harris at No. 2. From there, Clemson made quick work of the Runnin’ Bulldogs, winning the match 4-0 courtesy of wins from Augusto at No. 2 singles, Drake at No. 3 singles and Harris at No. 5 singles.
Clemson and Mercer faced off in the afternoon at Hoke Sloan Tennis Center, with the Tigers again taking the doubles point. Harrington and Augusto were victorious at No. 1 and Robert Dudley and Luke Johnson took home the win at No. 3 to secure the point. In singles play, Harrington, Augusto and Brent Lett won singles matches to at No. 1, 2 and 4 to lead Clemson to victory.
In the nightcap, Clemson swept it’s third opponent of the day in Wofford. The Tigers clinched the doubles point with wins by Drake and Harris at No. 2 and Dudley and Johnson at No. 3. Augusto, Johnson and Dudley each won singles matches. Augusto beat Wofford’s Rob Galloway in three sets at No. 1 singles, while Johnson rolled through Trevor Gotkowski at No. 4 singles, winning 6-3, 6-1 and Dudley clinched the match with a tough 7-5, 7-6 win at No. 5 singles.
“In 32 years of coaching, I’ve never been more proud of a team for enduring what most people think is crazy, playing three matches against three very good teams,” head coach Chuck McCuen said. “The next step of growth for the Clemson men’s tennis program was persevering through this day. I’m really proud of every player, especially Alejandro Augusto. He played every match, six matches, won them all and helped stopped momentum against Wofford in a very tight match at No. 1 singles.”
Clemson hits the road the face Auburn next Friday, Feb. 13 at 1 p.m. The Tigers’ next home match will be their ACC opener, on Friday, March 6 against Georgia Tech.
