Clemson student-athletes hosted a sports clinic for local Blue Ridge Council affiliate of the Boy Scouts of America on Saturday, February 21st. Approximately 150 Boy Scouts and their families attended the event in Jervey Gym, which lasted from 8 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The event began with registration and an opening ceremony in which members of the 2014 ACC Champion Clemson men’s soccer team greeted the Boy Scouts and handed out camp flyers. The Boy Scouts were then divided into groups to learn how to play specific sports.
Volleyball, rowing and football student-athletes each ran their respective stations, teaching the Boy Scouts the fundamentals of their sports. The boy scouts were split up into groups and each group attended each of the three stations for 50-minute sessions. Nine Clemson volleyball student-athletes ran the volleyball station, teaching the boy scouts how to pass, set and hit a volleyball. Two rowing student-athletes hosted their station at the Clemson rowing boathouse and taught the children how to erg. Finally, 43 Clemson football student-athletes played football with the boy scouts, serving as the quarterbacks and referees for the children’s scrimmages.
The boy scouts learned about the three sports and enjoyed spending time with the Clemson student-athletes. According to Robert Johnson, Director of Field Service for the Blue Ridge Council, “our young people had a great experience meeting the athletes and getting to run through a few drills. The athletes were very gracious and worked well with the kids.”
