CLEMSON, S.C. – A record six Clemson athletic teams posted a team GPA of over 3.0 in the spring semester of 2000 according to statistics released by the school’s athletic council on Wednesday. For the third straight semester the overall GPA for the student-athletes was at an all-time high, this year reaching 2.76. That is just .02 below the average for the overall student body, the closest differential on record.
Three Clemson teams posted all-time high team GPAs for a semester. That list included the Clemson football team, which had a 2.49 team GPA, far ahead of the previous high of 2.38. Tommy Bowden has been the head coach at Clemson for three semesters and his team has broken the previous semester GPA record twice. An all-time record 39 Clemson football players were on the academic honor roll, including seven members of the freshman signee class of 1999.
Trevor Adair’s soccer program had a 3.12 team GPA for the semester, far ahead of the previous best of 3.01. Suzie Lueck’s rowing team had a 3.27 GPA for the semester, the highest in its four semester old program and the second highest by any Clemson program in the spring.
The leading team in terms of GPA in the spring was the women’s tennis team. The team coached by Nancy Harris posted a 3.30 GPA for the spring, best by that program since it posted an all-time Clemson record 3.64 in the spring of 1995. Harris had eight of her players on the academic honor roll. It was quite a semester for the women’s tennis team, as it excelled with a 15-7 record on the courts, including an NCAA Tournament berth and final top 25 ranking.
The Clemson baseball team had a record number of academic honor roll selections, 18. That list included six starters on this year’s College World Series team. The Clemson men’s basketball team had a 2.45 team GPA, second best on record, and had a record number (6) of academic honor roll selections.
The list of teams with over a 3.0 team GPA included the aforementioned rowing, men’s soccer, and women’s tennis teams, plus the volleyball, golf and women’s swimming teams. The Clemson golf program had a 3.09 team GPA in the same semester in which it finished seventh at the NCAA Tournament and third in the final MasterCard poll. The volleyball team’s 3.11 team GPA was second best on record. Jolene Hoover’s team had six academic honor roll selections on her 31-3 team that set a school record for winning percentage. The women’s swimming team, which had a 7-3 record in the pool, had a 3.19 team GPA.
Ninety-two student-athletes were named to the Dean’s List, 20 more than any other semester in Clemson history. A total of 217 student-athletes were on the academic honor roll, second highest figure in history. Almost 46 percent of Clemson’s student-athletes are on the academic honor roll. A total of 24 student-athletes had a perfect 4.0, second highest semester figure in Clemson history.
The list of President’s List student-athletes includes first-team Academic All-American Kyle Young, the starting center on the Tiger football team, and second-team Academic All-American Chad Carson, the second leading tackler on the 1999 Tigers. Women’s swimming All-American Virginia Kirouac also was on the President’s List.
Other prominent student-athletes on the academic honor roll include golf Academic All-American All-American Jonathan Byrd, volleyball Academic All-District selection Heidi Cooper, Casey Stone and Khalil Greene, the top two hitters on the Clemson baseball team, All-ACC guards Angie Cossey and Chrissy Floyd, who helped Clemson to the NCAA women’s basketball tournament, and women’s tennis ACC Champion Carmina Giraldo.
