CLEMSON, SC – Clemson men’s basketball signee Marcus Thornton has been named to the U.S. roster for the 37th annual Capital Classic, which will be held April 15 at American University in Washington, D.C. Thornton is one of seven players headed to ACC programs from the U.S. roster. The Capital Classic pits U.S. All-Stars versus the top players from the greater Washington, D.C. area. This is the fourth straight year Clemson has had at least one signee participate in the Capital Classic.
This is the second All-Star game in which the future Tiger has been chosen to participate. He was also named to the roster for the Boys Senior Showcase, as chosen by the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association.
Thornton, a 6-foot-8 forward from Atlanta, GA, had an outstanding senior year on the hardwood for Westlake High School. He averaged 24 points and 12 rebounds per game and led Westlake to a berth in the AAAAA state championship game. He was named Region 4-AAAAA Player-of-the-Year last month, and was also named to the region’s All-Tournament Team after leading Westlake to the title.
Thornton raked in several honors throughout the 2009-10 season. In December, he was named MVP of the Chick-fil-A Classic in Columbia, SC. He was also chosen to the All-Classic Team for the Memphis vs. Atlanta Roundball Christmas Classic. The Atlanta Tip Off Club also named Thornton to its All-Metro Team.
