CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson men’s golf team will compete in the Dick’s Sporting Goods Collegiate Challenge Cup at the Golf Club of Tennessee near Nashville, TN this weekend. It is one of the most unusual tournaments in the nation this year from a format standpoint.
Clemson is one of 10 teams in the field, five from the ACC and five from the SEC. The 10 schools will play 36 holes of stroke play on Friday, September 20, followed by 18 holes on Saturday, September 21. Sunday, the teams will be paired in an ACC vs. SEC team match play event. It is the only tournament that will involve match play on the Clemson schedule.
The format is being used to simulate the NCAA Championship which plays stroke play and match play to determine the champion.
The ACC teams in the field are Clemson, Boston College, Virginia, Wake Forest and Duke. The SEC teams are Mississippi State, Georgia, Tennessee, Texas A&M and Vanderbilt. This will be Clemson’s third straight weekend on the course, the first time in history Clemson has had three tournaments in the month of September to open the season.
Head Coach Larry Penley will keep his same young lineup that includes three sophomores and two freshmen.
Cody Proveaux has been the top Clemson player so far with a 72.50 stroke average through two events. He opened the season with a fifth-place finish at the Carpet Classic in Dalton, GA, then finished 29th last week at the Fighting Illini Classic.
Miller Capps, another sophomore, is second on the team in stroke average with a 73.67 figure. He finished tied for 12th at the Carpet Classic to help Clemson to a fourth place team finish.
The third sophomore in the lineup is Stephen Behr, Clemson’s top player last year who has a 74.33 average so far this season. He finished strong at the Fighting Illini Invitational with a 71 in the last round, the best round by any Tiger at that event that was played on the difficult Olympia Fields course near Chicago.
Freshmen Austin Langdale and Carson Young complete the Clemson lineup. Langdale had a 12th place finish at the Carpet Classic in his first career event. Young finished 27th at the Carpet Classic and showed improvement over his three rounds at the Fighting Illini Classic.
Scores will be posted on golfstat.com over the weekend.
