PRINCETON, N.J. – The Clemson University men’s golf team holds the top-ranking in two preseason college golf polls. The Tigers were ranked number-one in the nation by MasterCard College Golf Rankings and by Golf World Magazine according to teams in the preseason edition of the MasterCard Collegiate Golf Rankings.
Clemson, which returns four of the five players that led the Tigers to a seventh place finish at the 2000 NCAA Championship, is the top-ranked men’s team in the preseason edition of the MasterCard Rankings with 291 votes.
The Tigers, who finished the 1999-2000 season ranked No. 3, also held the top spot in last year’s preseason rankings. Clemson had five of the 19 first place votes in the Golf World poll.
Clemson opens its season this weekend at the Ridges Intercollegiate. Head Coach Lucas Glover, John Engler, D.J. Trahan and Jani Saari. Ben Duncan, who played four tournaments last year as a freshman, also will be in the lineup.
Glover, Engler and Trahan are all ranked in the top 10 in the nation according to the MasterCard individual preseason poll. Glover is rated second, while Engler is fifth and D.J. Trahan is eighth. Luke Donald of Northwestern, who won three Rolex Collegiate Tour events last season and was the top-ranked men’s individual in the final 1999-2000 edition of the MasterCard Rankings, is ranked No. 1 in the preseason rankings with 300 votes. Glover is second, while Bryce Molder of Georgia Tech is third.
