Clemson Men’s Track and Field Team Wins Clemson Invitational

CLEMSON, S.C. – The Clemson men’s track and field team won the Clemson Invitational held Saturday at the Rock Norman Track Complex. The Tigers claimed the title with 231 points while Florida State was the runner up with 208 points. Western Carolina took third place with 56 points, Alabama was fourth with 53 points and Appalachian State finished fifth with 37 points. Todd Matthews automatically qualified for the NCAA Championships while Sultan Tucker was a provisional qualifier.

Matthews won the 110m hurdles with the automatic qualifying mark of13.65 while Tucker was second with a provisional time of 13.76. Jacey Harper won the 100m and 200m dashes with times of 10.35 and 21.17, respectively. Larry Griffin finished second in the 100m with a time of 10.40 and Ato Modibo was third in the 200m (21.56). Modibo claimed the 400m dash with a time of 46.21 and Garrick Copes posted a fourth place finish in the 800m (1:55.90). Jason Meany led the Tigers in the 1500m and the 500m runs. Meany was third in the 1500m with a time of 3:57.82 and won the 5000m in 15:19.24. Steve Alexander finished second in the 5000m with a time of 15:20.18 and Scott Shaw was third (15:35.46). The Tigers’ 4x400m relay “A” team won that event in 3:10.27 while the “B” team finished fourth with a time of 3:20.04.

In the field events, Malcolm Reynolds won the high jump with a mark of 7’1.5″. Adam Klotzback led the Tigers in the pole vault, clearing 16’3.25″ while Benjamin Hess was third (15’9.25″). Tony Lloyd was Clemson’s top finisher in the long jump with a fifth-place mark of 22’9.75″. Brit Barrow led Clemson in the triple jump with a mark of 47’6.5″. Matt Lombardi finished second in the shot put and the discus throw, recording marks of 50′ and 154’6″, respectively. Andy Giesler finished third in the discus with a mark of 152’2″ and won the javelin with a mark of 189’7″. David Schenek claimed the hammer event (174’11”) and Brett Varner finished third (172’4″). Doug Ameigh took third in the javelin with a mark of 178’6″.
