Clemson Men’s Track And Field In First Place After Day One At Clemson Invitational

CLEMSON, SC – The Tiger distance runners swept the top three places in the 5000-meter run and the Clemson men’s track and field team leads the field after the first day of competition at the 2008 Clemson Invitational.

Bryce Iverson claimed the 5000-meter title with a time of 14:57.40, while Sam Bryfczynski (15:04.34) and Jonathan Sunde (15:22.47) finished second and third, respectively, to earn the Tigers 24 points.

Clemson ranks first with 36.5 points, ahead of second-place Charlotte by 9.5 points. Georgia is in third after the first day with 25, followed by N.C. Central with 15 and N.C. State with 11.5. Rounding out the bottom five were Gardner-Webb with nine points, Wake Forest with eight, Florida State with six, Auburn with five and Anderson University with three.

Saturday’s action will begin at 11:00 am at the Clemson Indoor Track with the last event scheduled for 5:05 pm

The Clemson sprinters ran the top three times in the 60-meter prelims as C.J. Spiller and Trenton Guy each posted NCAA provisionally qualifying marks. Padgett, who has already automatically qualified for the NCAA Indoor Championships, ran 6.66 on Friday night with Spiller running a personal-best at 6.71. Friday’s race was Spiller’s first of the season. Guy, who provisionally qualified at the Clemson Opener in December, had a time of 6.74.

Alex Padgett threw a season-best mark in the weight throw on Friday night, posting a distance of 17.06 meters to finish fourth. Stephen White also competed in the event with a throw of 12.52 meters to rank ninth.

Brandon Carter qualified for Saturday’s finals in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.59, which ranked 10th in the prelims.

The distance medley relay team of Chad Holte, Travis Swaggard, Chris Slate and Tyler Morey ran a time of 10:16.76 for a third-place finish in the event.

Josh Fowler posted a mark of 6.82 meters in the long jump to finish in a tie for seventh, while Conner Webb jumped 6.09 meters. Webb also participated in the 60 meters with a time of 7.46.
