Clemson Men’s Tennis Will Open 2010 Season Saturday

CLEMSON, SC – The Clemson men’s tennis team will open its 2010 season on Saturday, January 16, as the Tigers play host to Gardner-Webb at 9:00 a.m. and Davidson at 3:00 p.m. at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.

Chuck McCuen is entering his second season as head coach at Clemson. The Tigers return four starters in Carlos Alvarez, Gera Boryachinskiy, Rok Bizjak, and Kevin Galloway.

This will be the second meeting between Clemson and Gardner-Webb in men’s tennis. Clemson won the previous meeting 7-0, in 2003.

This will be the eighth meeting between Clemson and Davidson on the tennis courts. Davidson leads the overall series 5-2. The two teams haven’t played in 43 years. The Tigers won the last two meetings played between the two school in 1966 and 1967 by identical 8-1 scores. The series started in 1923 between Clemson and Davidson. The two schools met in 1923, 1925, and twice in 1929. The Tigers also played the Wildcats in 1946 before the two meetings in 1966 and 1967.

The Tigers are celebrating the 100th year of men’s tennis at Clemson. The Tigers first sponsored Tennis in 1910 as the Tigers started sending representatives to the state tournament in singles and doubles play.
