March 14, 2001

Clemson, SC – The 40th-ranked Clemson men’s tennis team will travel to Montgomery, Alabama to begin play on Thursday in the Blue Gray National Collegiate Classic. After receiving a bye in the round of 32, Clemson’s round of 16 match will be against 13th-ranked and top seeded Virginia Commonwealth on Thursday at 10:30 AM. The winner of that match will play on Friday against the winner of the Minnesota and Auburn match. Earlier this season, Clemson defeated Minnesota 4-3 in their third match of the Boise State Invitational.

All 18 teams taking part in the four-day tournament are nationally ranked. The top four seeds for the tournament are: Virginia Commonwealth, Fresno State, Alabama, and Notre Dame. There will be a consolation bracket for the tournament so each team, regardless of their first round result, will play matches on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Clemson enters this weekend’s action with a 3-7 record. The Tigers have faced a nationally ranked opponent in each of their first ten matches. Clemson’s doubles team of Eric Cohn and Darren Knight are 8-2 this season and are ranked 23rd nationally. In singles, the Tigers’ Josh Goffi is ranked 61st nationally.
