MIAMI, FL – The Clemson men’s tennis team swept Central Florida (7-0) Saturday at the University of Miami Spring Fling Tennis Tournament to open the 2003 season. The Tigers are 1-0 on the season.
In singles action, sophomore Nathan Thompson defeated Catalin Bradu by a score of 7-6, 4-6, 6-2 at number one singles. At flight two singles, sophomore Sander Koning defeated Gabriel Strangberg 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. Tiger freshman Jarmaine Jenkins downed Antonio Sierra 6-4, 6-2 at number three singles. Junior Damiisa Robinson earned a victory at number four singles, defeating Augusto Sanabria 6-1, 1-6, 6-1. At number five singles, senior Micah Thompson defeated Simon Jager 6-2, 6-3. Junior John Boetsch won at number six singles, defeating Paul Rany 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles play, the Tigers’ number one team of Nathan Thompson and Jenkins defeated Bradu and Sierra 8-3. Clemson earned a victory at the number two doubles position by a score of 8-3 over Central Florida’s Strangberg and Sanabria. Clemson’s Robinson and Brett Twente defeated Jager and Jacob Auerbach by a score of 8-4 to win number three doubles.
The Tigers will face William and Mary at 9:00 a.m. and Miami at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday to conclude tournament.
