Clemson, S.C. — Forty percent of Clemson’s starting basketball lineup will spend much of the summer in rehabilitation, Head Coach Larry Shyatt announced Tuesday.
Starting forward Chucky Gilmore sustained a sprain medial collateral ligament on his left knee last week while playing in a pickup game in his hometown of Fayetteville, NC. The injury is not expected to require surgery. Gilmore will spend much of the summer in rehabilitation and is currently on crutches.
Gilmore, a 6-8 forward, started 23 games and played in 27 of Clemson’s 30 contests a year ago. He averaged 3.7 points and 6.1 rebounds per game last year. The rebound average was second best on the Clemson team.
Allenspach, a 7-1 center, had back surgery to solve a disk problem. The surgery was performed in North Carolina last week. Allenspach had been bothered off and on by the back problem last season. The rehabilitation process will take all summer, but Clemson’s only senior in 2000-01 will be ready for the start of practice in October.
Last year Allenspach averaged 11.4 points and 7.1 rebounds per game. He ranked second to All-ACC guard Will Solomon in scoring and was first in rebounding. Allenspach shot 74 percent from the foul line, second highest in Clemson history for a center. He ranked in the top 10 in the ACC in rebounding and foul shooting, the first Clemson center in history to do that.
