Clemson Men Seventh After Three Track & Field Events on Day One of ACC Championships

Winston-Salem, NC – Clemson’s men’s track & field team stands in seventh place after the first of three days of competition at the ACC Outdoor Championships held at Kentner Stadium on the Wake Forest campus. The Tigers tallied four points on day one, two each in the hammer throw and javelin throw.

In the decathlon, 2005 All-ACC performer Ryan Koontz is the overall leader after day one with 3,872 points. Koontz won the heptathlon at the ACC Indoor meet. Teammate Brent Hobbs is third with 3,661 points, while Mike Feathers has 3,401 points through five events.

Hobbs was second in the 100m with a time of 11.30 and first in the long jump at 23’2.75″. Koontz was second in the long jump with a mark of 22’6.25″. In the shot put, Feathers had the best toss of the day at 43’1.5″. Koontz (41’7.25″) and Hobbs (39’8″) finished second and third in that event, respectively. Koontz was outstanding in the final two events on Thursday, the high jump and 400m. He cleared 6’9.5″, which tied his personal best, to win that event. He also was third in the 400 after crossing the finish line in 49.88. Hobbs cleared 6’1.25″ in the high jump and ran a 51.61 in the last event. Feathers cleared 6’0″ and posted a time of 52.36 in the 400m.

Hobbs scored for the Tigers in the javelin throw with a personal best of 184’3″, good enough for seventh place in the event. It was the best mark this season in that event by any Tiger. Koontz (163’10”) and Feathers (156’4″) also competed in the javelin on Thursday.

Jay Lumpkins ran the 10,000m in his first-ever ACC Outdoor Championship. He came home 12th after posting a time of 32:07.67.

The competition will resume Friday with the final five events (110m hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw, 1500m) of the decathlon at 10:30 AM. The high jump will take place at 1:00 PM.
