Clemson Meets New York Tech

March 29, 2001

Clemson, SC – The Clemson baseball team will play host to the New York Institute of Technology for a three-game series this weekend at Clemson’s Kingsmore Stadium. It will be the first ever meeting between the two schools on the diamond.

Friday’s game is scheduled for 7:15 PM first pitch, while Saturday’s game will start at 7:00 PM. Sunday’s first pitch is set for 1:00 PM. All games will be broadcast by the Clemson Tiger Network, which can be heard locally on WGOG 96.3 FM in Walhalla.

Clemson enters the contest with an 18-8 record, including a 5-1 conference record. The Tigers look to rebound from an 8-4 loss at Georgia on Wednesday night.

Clemson’s probable starter for Friday’s game is Steve Reba, a right hander who has been the ace of the Tiger pitching staff so far this season. Reba leads the team in innings pitched (35.1), strikeouts (35), opponents batting average (.187), and ERA (2.27). The junior has a 4-0 record and the Tigers have won all six games he has started.

New York Tech has a 4-8 record this season and is 2-2 in its first year in the New York State Baseball Conference. The Bears are expected to start Rob Taormina, a right handed pitcher who is 1-1 on the year with a 5.30 ERA, on Friday.

New York Tech has two starters batting over .400 for the season. First baseman Ryan Nevins is hitting .410 and leads the team in RBIs with 18. Center fielder Bryan Goetz leads the team in batting average with a .442 mark.

Clemson is led at the plate by first baseman Michael Johnson, who is hitting .403 for his 25 games this year. Casey Stone is batting .368 and has stolen 14 bases in 17 attempts, while Jeff Baker leads the club in home runs (8) and RBIs (33).
