Clemson Kicks Off Swimming And Diving Season

CLEMSON, SC — The Clemson swimming and diving teams kicked off the 2001-2002 season Friday afternoon in the annual Orange and White intra-squad meet at McHugh Natatorium. The White team claimed the victory by outscoring the Orange team, 237.50 – 229.50.

Four dual winners on the women’s side Jenna Burtch, Jenna Burtch won the 50 free (24.04), the 200 free (1:53.18) and the 100 free (52:00) for the Orange squad. Also pitching in to the Orange effort was sophomore Kate Walker who won the 200 back (2:06.64), the 100 back (58.55) and the 200 IM (2:10.49). Junior Amy Tolley, a member of the Orange squad, swept the diving events by winning both the 1m (255.00) and 3m (259.0) boards. Junior Mandy Commons claimed victories for the White team in the100 breast (1:04.50) and the 200 breast (2:22.47) events.

Five dual winners for the men The White team enjoyed the majority of the dual winners on the men’s side. Brent Hitchcock, Buddy Reed, Brent Hitchcock won the 200 free (1:46.06) and the 500 free (4:48.64). Freshman Buddy Reed made an impressive debut for the Tigers by winning the 100 back (53.38) the 200 IM (1:57.88), and the 200 back (1:54.80). Sophomore Rob Kummer dominated the butterfly events winning both the 100 fly (55:41) and 200 fly (1:56.60). Junior Gregor Govse also pitched in to the White team’s total by claiming the 100 breast (58:26) and 200 breast (2:09.36) events. Sophomore Drew Scheerhorn was a dual winner for the Orange team, finishing first in the 50 free (21.75) and 100 free (47.68).

Tigers to open ACC competition against Virginia on Oct. 27 The Tiger swimming and diving teams will play host to the Virginia Cavaliers at McHugh Natatorium on Friday, Oct. 27, at 1 p.m. The women will be competing in a tri-meet as they also play host to the Rice Owls.
