Clemson Indoor Track & Field Teams Compete at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, VA – The Clemson men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams competed in the Pepsi Indoor Invitational at Virginia Tech this weekend. Sophomore Ato Modibo, the 1999 Indoor National Champion in the 400m, recorded an automatic qualifying time of 46.31 to win the event this weekend. He will compete at the National Championships March 10-11 in Fayetteville, AR.

Junior Sultan Tucker was the top collegiate finisher in the 60m hurdles, recording a provisional qualifying time of 7.90, while senior Charles Allen was fifth at 8.12 in the event. Senior Shawn Crawford placed second among collegiate runners in the 60m dash with a provisional time of 6.72, followed by Tiger freshman David Collins in third with a time of 6.75. Collins was also the top collegiate runner with a time of 21.67 in the 200m dash.

Several other rookies performed well for the Tigers at the meet. Freshman Otto Spain was fifth with a time of 21.94 in the 200m and fourth at 48.18 in the 400m, and freshman Jacey Harper placed tenth with a time of 22.16 in the 200m event. In the distance events, freshman Scott Shaw placed tenth among collegiate competitors with a time of 8:54.72 in the 3,000m.

In the field events, junior Benjamin Hess placed second among collegiate competitors with a mark of 16’5 1/2″ in the pole vault. Sophomore Ryan Lewis was third after clearing the same mark on a later jump. Sophomore Doug Ameigh placed fourth in the high jump at 6’9 3/4″, while freshman Malcolm Reynolds was sixth in the event with a mark of 6’6″.

Sophomore Kai Maull was sixth in the long jump (24’1″), and senior Bryan Williams was eighth in the triple jump (48’7 1/4″). Sophomore Keith Rzewuski was the Tigers top thrower in the meet, placing sixth in the shot put (50’4″) and eighth in the weight throw (51’8 1/2″).

For the women’s team, senior Erika van Reenen was the top collegiate runner with a time of 17:17.93 in the 5,000m. Junior LaShonda Cutchin finished fifth with a time of 56.48 in the 400m, and freshman Shannon Murray was 12th in the 200m with a time of 25.41. Cutchin placed 13th in the event with a time of 25.50.

Freshman April Brunson finished 27th in the 800m (2:25.95), and senior Anne Stowell was 18th in the mile run at 5:18.97. Freshman Stephanie Zabel placed 17th with a time of 11:26.03 in the 3,000m. The Tigers’ 4x800m relay team finished fourth with a time of 9:22.27, and the distance medley relay team was 10th with a time of 12:22.48. Sophomore Sheri Smith finished 19th with a mark of 17’6 1/4″ in the long jump.

The Clemson teams will compete in the Ikon Invitational in Johnson City, TN, next weekend.
