Clemson Improves to Fourth Place after Two Rounds in Puerto Rico

EL GRANDE, PR – Miller Capps, Cody Proveaux and Stephen Behr all had rounds in the 60s to lead Clemson to a 12-under-par team score 276 in the second of the Puerto Rico Classic.  Clemson had the second best team round among the 15 teams and enters Tuesday’s final round in fourth place at 13-under-par 563.

The 22nd annual tournament is being played at the par 72 Rio Mar Country Club River Course in El Grande, Puerto Rico.

Number-one ranked Alabama leads the tournament with a 31-under par 545, including the Crimson Tide’s 16-under par score of 272 on Monday. Georgia Tech stands in second place at 21-under-par 555, while Georgia is third at 17-under-par 559. Clemson stands fourth at 563 and Purdue is fifth at 571.

Clemson had its best team round vs. par since March 18, 2012 when Larry Penley‘s team shot a 16-under-par 272 at the Furman Invitational. All five Clemson players shot even par or better and the five players combined for 31 birdies. All five players made at least five birdies.  Clemson’s 276 score was the second best of the day, trailing only the 272 by number-one ranked Alabama.

Capps led Tigers with a five-under-par 67 on Monday, his second best round of the year and tied for his best round vs. par in 2013-14. The native of Denver, NC shot a 31 on the back nine and finished the day with eight birdies, the most by a Tiger in a round this year.

Capps started slowly with a double bogey on the eighth hole, his fourth hole of the day, then finished strong with birdies on five of his last seven holes, including birdies on the 16th, 17th and 18th holes. He was the only player in the field to birdie the last three holes on the course. Capps stands in a tie for fourth place after two rounds with a 137 score.

Proveaux started his round with six birdies within his first 11 holes. He made birdies on the seventh, eighth and ninth holes consecutively, the only player in the field to birdie each of those three holes on Monday. He finished with a four-under par 68 and stands in seventh place individually at 138 after two rounds.

Stephen Behr fired a second round 69, his second round in the 60s this year. The sophomore from Florence, SC had four birdies and just one bogey in his second round performance.  His 143 score for two rounds is tied for 25th.

Freshmen Austin Langdale and Carson Young both had rounds of even par 72. Langdale made birdies on 11, 12 and 13, the only player in the field to birdie those three holes. He finished with six birdies and six bogeys and stands at 145 through two rounds, good enough for 32nd place. Young scored seven shots better than he did in the first round. He made birdie on two of the last three holes to shoot even par. His 151 score is tied for 60th.
