Clemson Finishes Third at Schooner Fall Classic

Clemson, S.C.—Alice Hewson set a Clemson scoring record for 54 holes and led Clemson to a third-place team finish at the Schooner Fall Classic .   The two-day tournament concluded on Sunday afternoon at the par 71 Belmar Country Club in Norman, Okla.  It was the first tournament for new Clemson coach Kelley Hester.

Hewson shot a four-under-par 67 on Sunday to finish with a 5-hole score of 203, 10-under-par.   Her performance broke the Clemson record for total score and score vs. par that had been established by Ashlan Ramsey at the 2013 Ruth’s Chris Intercollegiate in Chapel Hill, NC.  Ramsey had shot a nine under par 207 at that event on a par 72 course to set the marks for total score and score versus par.

Hewson, a sophomore from Great Britain, finished second to  Morgane Metraux of Florida State, who finished with a 12-under-par score of 201.  Hewson had scores of 66-70-67.   Her 66 in the first round was the second best 18-hole score in Clemson history.  The only score better is her 65 last year at the Cougar Classic in Charleston.

“The course played like a totally different layout today with different winds,” said Hester.   “The girls adjusted well. We beat some good team and we are off to a great start.  Alice Hewson was very solid and played well down the stretch.  She gave herself a chance to win.”

Florida State won the team competition with an 829 score, 23-under-par.  Alabama, ranked No. 1 in the nation by Golfweek, finished second at 841.  Clemson was third at  849, three shots ahead of host school Oklahoma.  Kent State, ranked fourth in the nation by Golfweek, finished fifth at 858.

Clemson had a team score of one-under-par 283 on Sunday.  In addition to Hewson’s performance,  three Tigers contributed scores of  one-over-par 72.  Sydney Legacy, Ana Paul Valdes and Sloan Shanahan all finished with that score.  Shanahan came back for that score after having to withdraw due to injury in the second round on Saturday.

Legacy finished in a tie for 18th with a 215 score for 54 holes, while Valdes, a freshman playing in her first career tournament, finished 25th at 218.   Marisa Messana had a 78 on Sunday, but she finished tied for 27th for the tournament with a 219 score.
