Clemson Finishes Third at Carpet Classic

Clemson, S.C.—Bryson Nimmer and  Doc Redman both had final round scores of four-under-par 68 to lead Clemson to  third-place finish out of 14 teams at the Carpet Classic in Dalton, Georgia.  It was the season opening tournament for Larry Penley’s  13th ranked Tigers, who defeated four preseason top 20 teams in the performance.

Virginia won the 54-hole event with an 833 score, while Auburn was second at 839.  The Tigers were third at 16-under-par 848, four strokes better than  seventh-ranked LSU.  Georgia Tech and sixth-ranked Florida were tied for fifth at 856.    Clemson also defeated No. 16 Alabama (874) and 17th ranked South Carolina (875) in the tournament that was played on the par 72 Farm Golf Club course.

Nimmer, the 2016 ACC Rookie of the Year, improved each round with scores of 70-69-68 in finishing with a career best 207 score.  Nimmer started the day with birdies on five of his first six holes, and finished with 18 birdies for the three rounds, tied second in the tournament.   He finished tied for fifth in the field of 75 golfers.

Redman’s 210 total for 54 holes ranked is the best for a Clemson freshman in his first tournament since the 2012 Carpet Classic when Stephen Behr shot a 209.  Redman had rounds of 70-72-68 and finished with 14 birdies for the 54 holes.    Redman, who  had five birdies and an eagle on Sunday, just missed a top 10 and finished 11th.

Carson Young was Clemson’s third best golfer at the tournament with a 215 score for three rounds, but he was the Tigers non-counter on Sunday with a four-over-par 76.

Freshman William Nottingham had a 73 on Sunday, including  four- under-par start for his first 12 holes.  Josh Fickes’ score counted all three rounds and he finished with a 219 score, good enough for 38th place.  He shot a 74 on Sunday, including a birdie on the 18th hole.

Clemson played without returning All-ACC player Austin Langdale, who is recovering from summer shoulder surgery.  Clemson freshman Jonathan Rector played as an individual and had a 222 score for the three rounds, good enough for 49th place.
