Clemson, SC – Ben Martin shot a two-under par 214 total to lead Clemson to a ninth place finish at the Carpet Classic in Dalton, GA on Sunday. It was the opening event of the 2009-10 season for the Tigers. The 12-team tournament included seven of the top 20 teams in the nation.
Martin, fresh off a runnerup finish at the US Amateur last month, had rounds of 70-73-71 in recording his 214 score. Jacob Burger and Alex Boyd were tied for 33rd in the tournament at 222 for the 54 holes. Burger had a pair of under par rounds with a 71 in the first round and a 69 in the second round, but a second round 82 kept him out of the top 10. His 69 on Sunday was the low round of the tournament by a Clemson golfer.
Luke Hopkins had a 74 on Sunday after a pair of 77s in the first two rounds. The senior from Greer finished 45th. Crawford Reeves, playing in his first college event, finished with a 76 on Sunday and a 236 total for the tournament,, 54th place.
Tennessee won the event with a 851 score. Clemson finished 9th at 20 over par 884.
