CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) – Tyrone Walker scored 25 points as Winthrop beat in-state rival Clemson for the first time ever 66-61 on Tuesday night.

The Tigers (7-4) trailed for most of the game, but cut the Eagles lead to one after Edward Scott’s short jumper in the lane made it 62-61 with 1:15 left.

Winthrop (3-5) committed a shot clock violation on its next possession, giving Clemson a chance to take the lead. But Chris Hobbs missed from close range, and Edward Scott’s misfired on a 3-point attempt.

Walker then put the game away for the Eagles with a dunk off a long inbound pass with six seconds remaining.

Former Clemson player Tywan Harris, who redshirted with the Tigers during the 1997-98 season, added 17 points for the Eagles. Greg Lewis pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds.

The Tigers were led by Jamar McKnight with 20 points and Hobbs with 12.

Clemson’s poor shooting continued against Winthrop. The Tigers shot just 24-for-67 (35.8 percent) from the field and made just 5-of-29 (17.2 percent) from behind the arc. Scott and Tony Stockman, Clemson’s starting guards, were a combined 4-for-24 from the field and 1-for-16 from behind the arc.

Winthrop, who made just nine field goals in the second half , finished the game shooting 23-of-57 (40.4 percent) from the field and 9-for-18 (50 percent) on 3-pointers.
