Clemson Falls To Duke, 3-1, In Thursday Night Volleyball Action

DURHAM, NC – The Tiger volleyball team fell to the Duke Blue Devils, 3-1 (31-29, 28-30, 30-20, 30-20), on Thursday night in Durham, NC. Clemson dropped to 9-11 overall and 4-8 in the ACC with the loss, while Duke improved to 14-6 on the season and 8-4 against conference foes. Brittany Ross led the Tigers, posting 15 kills and 19 digs in the contest, while Jeannette Abbott had a match-high 22 kills.

The Blue Devils were led by Tealle Hunkus with 20 kills and 18 digs on the night. Duke had five players record double-digit kills in the match and Jenny Shull tallied 21 defensive saves in the win.

The Blue Devils claimed a tight game one, 31-29, as neither team led by more than three points during the game. Clemson held a 25-22 advantage late in the game, scoring the 25th point on Ross’ first career service ace. However, Duke tied the score at 27 apiece and went on to win the game.

The Tigers responded with a win in game two by a score of 30-28. Clemson pulled ahead at 19-14 and then widened the gap to 27-20 before the Blue Devils managed to bring their point total to within one of the Tigers’ at 29-28. Clemson closed out the game on a kill by Jeannette Abbott to tie the match at one game all.

In game three, Duke scored seven straight points on Shull’s serve to take a 19-10 lead that the Tigers were unable to overcome. The Blue Devils won the game, 30-20, to go up 2-1 in the match. Duke then claimed the fourth game by the same score to post the victory.

The Tigers will take on the Demon Deacons of Wake Forest on Friday night in Winston-Salem, NC. The teams will take to the court at 7:00 PM at Reynold’s Gym. Fans may follow the action via livestats on www.clemsontigers.com.
