Clemson Earns Best Finish at Carolina Cup Since 2017

CLEMSON, S.C. — The Clemson rowing team took to the water for its first race of the 2020 spring campaign on Saturday. Taking part in the Carolina Cup, Clemson hosted the event at the Clemson Rowing Docks. Perfect conditions on Lake Hartwell made for a great regatta, and the Tigers, who competed against the Duke Blue Devils and the North Carolina Tar Heels, fared well.

Clemson finished in second place for the program’s highest finish in the event since 2017. Six different Tiger boats competed on Saturday morning, and Clemson tallied 87 points. Duke won all five races and earned the coveted Daughtry Cup by amassing 99 points and finishing in first place. North Carolina rounded out the field with 78 points and a third-place showing.

Clemson’s most impressive performance came in the premier 1V8 event. Facing a strengthening headwind, the Tigers’ boat, which was coxed by Kate Hadley, recorded a solid time of 7:15.59. The 2V4A boat fielded by the Tigers showed out, as well, by completing the race in 8:01.79.

The Tigers took second place in four of the five races, with Clemson finishing as the runner-up in the 1V8, 2V8, 1V4 and the 2V4 events. Clemson fielded two boats in the 2V4 race. The 2V4A boat crossed the finish line second overall, and the 2V4B boat was fourth across. In the 3V8/4V8, Clemson’s boat came in fifth. In addition, Clemson’s 3V4 lineup competed in a non-official race.
