Clemson Drops Two Matches to Nationally Ranked South Alabama

CLEMSON, S.C. – The 31st-ranked Clemson men’s tennis team dropped two matches by the scores of 6-1 and 4-3 to 16th-ranked South Alabama on Sunday afternoon at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center. With the two losses, Clemson falls to 0-2 on the year.

In the first match of the doubleheader, South Alabama took two out of three doubles matches from the Tigers to capture the doubles point and to set the tone for singles competition. Clemson’s lone win in doubles was an 8-4 upset by Josh Goffi and Josh Goffi of Clemson in three sets 6-4, 6-7, 7-6. At the number-two singles slot, 82nd-ranked Julien Raynal of South Alabama defeated Clemson’s Marko Gojanovic by a score of 6-3, 4-6, 7-6. While playing number-three singles, Micah Thompson picked up the loan point of the match for the Tigers as he won in three sets over Vince Baudat 7-5, 3-6, 7-6.

In the second match, Clemson took an early lead from South Alabama as the Tigers won two out of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point. In singles, Raynal defeated Goffi 6-4, 6-3 to earn the point from the number-one position. Thompson and Gojanovic, playing in the number-two and number-three slots respectively, picked up the two singles victories for the Tigers.

Clemson will next be in action on February 9-11 as the Tigers travel to Boise State for the Boise State Invitational.
