Feb. 21, 2005

Box Score

Wake Forest forward Liz Strunk hit an ACC season-high 40 points to lead the Deacons to a 68-60 victory over Clemson at Littlejohn Coliseum on Monday night. Strunk’s incredible effort upped Wake’s record to 14-11 overall, 3-9 in the ACC. The loss was the 12th straight for Clemson, establishing a new school record. The Lady Tigers are now 7-18 on the year, 1-11 in conference play.

Strunk became the first opposing player to score 40 or more points at Littlejohn Coliseum since Linda Page did so for N.C. State during the 1983-84 season. She was the first player to hit 40 in any game since Andrea Stinson of the Wolfpack did it during the 1988-89 season. Strunk’s effort topped her previous career high of 30, which she had against Clemson in the first game this season between the two teams. Thus, Strunk has 70 points in two games against Clemson this season.

Freshman point guard Tasha Taylor played the best all-around game of her young career for Clemson. She tied a career-high with 11 points on 5-11 shooting. She set career highs with seven rebounds, eight assists, and three blocked shots. In addition, she had three steals for the Lady Tigers.

Reggie Maddox played 36 minutes despite an obvious nagging injury and scored 10 points. Maxienne White contributed nine points and five rebounds for Clemson. The Lady Tigers were without the services of shooting guard Tasha Phillips, who broke a bone in her foot during Sunday’s practice. She is out for the remainder of the season.

Strunk scored 17 first-half points on 6-9 shooting. She helped the Deacons to a 10-point lead in the first half, following a three-pointer that made it 34-24 in favor of Wake Forest. But Clemson closed to within three at halftime, 36-33. Maddox scored five points during a 9-2 run by the Lady Tigers to close the opening period. Clemson shot 53.6 percent in the first half, its best shooting performance in the opening half all season.

In the second, Wake Forest again put together a healthy lead thanks to Strunk’s shooting. The Deacons led by as much as 13 at 53-40, but Clemson came storming back. The Lady Tigers put together a 12-0 run to pull within one point of the lead. The Lady Tigers cut the lead to one point on two more occasions, but never could overtake the Deacons in the scoring column. With the Deacons holding a 59-58 lead, Strunk hit five of six free throws to extend the Wake Forest lead.

The Lady Tigers conclude the home portion of their 2004-05 schedule on Thursday, February 24 when Georgia Tech plays at Clemson. The game will feature a celebration of 30 years of women’s athletics and 50 years of co-education, with the concourse area opening at 5:30 PM for visitors. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM and the game will be televised live by Comcast Sports Southeast.
