Raleigh, NC — The Clemson men’s tennis team swept doubles competition and won four out of six singles matches to down NC State 5-2 on Friday afternoon in Raleigh. With the win, the Tigers improve 11-15 overall on the season and 3-5 in the ACC.
Due to the threat of inclement weather, both squads elected to play singles first and Clemson came out on fire with straight set victories at No. 3 by Goran Sterijovski (6-1, 6-2) and Micah Thompson at No. 6 (6-2, 6-2) to take a 2-0 lead.
NC State’s Matt Lucas closed the gap to one point when he registered a straight set victory over Jamin Thompson at No. 1 (7-6, 6-0). Moments later Ryan Boward pulled the Wolfpack even at two with a win over Sander Koning at No. 2 with a 6-2, 6-4 victory. The loss was the first in the last seven matches for the freshman Koning.
The Tigers then edged ahead once again with a victory at No. 4 by Damiisa Robinson in three sets (6-3, 5-7, 6-3) over NC State’s R.J. Murray, snapping Murray’s five-match winning streak. Clemson’s Marko Gojanovic then clinched the match with a three set victory over Shane Sealy by a score of 6-7, 6-2, 7-6.
Clemson swept the doubles competition for the final margin.
The Tigers will next be in action on Saturday, April 13, when they play host to Miami at 2:00PM at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center.
