Clemson Downs Maryland In Women’s Hoops, 60-47

Clemson, SC – Marci Glenney scored 19 points and pulled in seven rebounds, including six offensive, leading Clemson to a 60-47 victory over Maryland in women’s college basketball Monday afternoon. The victory increased Clemson’s record to 11-7 overall, 3-4 in the ACC, while Maryland fell to 9-9 overall, 2-5 in the ACC.

Maryland had won the earlier meeting between the two teams this year in Cole Fieldhouse on December 5, 70-59. They had beaten Clemson three consecutive games over the last two years. Maryland shot 56 percent from the field in beating Clemson earlier this year, but could hit just 43 percent on Monday.

Glenney led the Lady Tigers with the 19 points, including 13 in the first half. It was just one point off her season high. She hit 3-5 three-point shots and has now made 15 of her last 22 three-point attempts. She had just one turnover in 34 minutes in Monday’s game, which began at 4:30 PM due to the Martin Luther King Holiday. Julie Aderhold was the only other double figure scorer for Clemson with 10 points off the bench. Maggie Slosser had just four points, but had eight rebounds.

Clemson won the rebound battle, 40-32, including a 22-6 advantage off the offensive boards. Clemson shot just 32 percent from the field, including 4-21 on three-point shots, but won. Clemson had just 10 turnovers on offense, but forced 23 and those extra 23 possessions proved to be the difference in the game. Maryland was led in scoring by Deedee Warley, who had 15 points and nine rebounds. Jameeca Harrell, another post player, had 10 points and nine rebounds. Both players shot 4-6 from the field. The rest of the Maryland team made just 7-23. Maryland made 50 percent of its three-point attempts, but took just six from long range.

Maryland jumped out to a 9-5 lead in the first six minutes. Terri Daniels scored five points in a row to give the Terps the early lead, but she scored just three points the rest of the game. Clemson then went on an 18-6 run over the next eight minutes and held a 23-15 advantage with 6:38 to go in the first half. Glenney scored eight points during that run. The lead grew to 10 points at intermission, 33-23.

Clemson extended the lead to 46-32 with 11 minutes left when Lakeia Stokes converted a foul line jumper. But, Maryland was not finished. The Terps went on a 10-2 run, holding Clemson to just two points over a six-minute time period. It was 48-42 when Harrell scored on a rebound with5:52 to play.

But, that was as close as Maryland could get. Julie Aderhold made two free throws to give Clemson an eight-point lead at 50-42, then Aderhold scored a layup off an in-bounds play, a play designed by Coach Jim Davis during a timeout.

Clemson held the double-digit lead all but one possession the rest of the game.

The Lady Tigers meet NC State on Thursday night at Littlejohn Coliseum before traveling to Georgia Tech for a Saturday evening game that will be televised by Fox Sports South.
